International Project THE MONSTERS

Monsters r us
“Monsters” is an international comics project inspired by the collective representations of fabulous creatures. The Latin etymology gives the basic, philosophic, if you will, theme: Man’s Fear, projected unto the Unknown, mirrored back as personifications of Adversity, Ugly, Bad, Failure, Fatality… The wise men say: Place Bad before everything. It’s the worst scenario we must always consider first: Be prepared! Be afraid… very afraid!

After a Polish-Romanian comic book “Star Wars clichés”, we – Joanna Karpowicz (Krakow), Cristian Loghin (from Craiova to Krakow) and myself (Craiova) – started a new project, “Everybody sucks”, about vampires and other bloody suckers! It grew into a comic book, “Monsters without borders” (pl. “Strach nie zna granic”). The fascination with the theme kept me going these years considering the appetite for Monsters, built by the games industry aimed at by the young artists who altogether deserted, alas, the less lucrative comics industry. Then, a collective organic album seems to be a realistic, suitable project for this context: contributions were pointed and teams began to form for better results.

Samca, Evil Eye, the undead “moroi”, the mind-messing & blowing spirits of the forest, the gorgeously vicious fairies… the malefic gang is back. We also catch a glimpse of the heroic projection of our will to fight the other… projections of the Ugly and the Bad in a couple of stories: the Valliant! This is the proto-cinema! Humor and parody entered the stage. Monsters have been updated, as the Other: the Opponent, the Stranger, the Machine, the further Alien, and the farther Extraterrestrial…

So, you see, “Monsters” are in progress…
