    SPECIAL GUEST OF THE FESTIVAL
    Enrique Sanchez Abuli, Barcelona, Spain

Enrique Sánchez Abulí (1945, Palau-del-Vidre, France) is comic book writer and translator. He is one of the central figures on Spanish comics scene and one of the leading European script writers. Although his name is mainly associated with famous comic Torpedo 1936, during last four decades Abuli proved that he is exceptionally productive writer. He began his career way back in 1970 with the serial Curro Peláez (with Chici de la Fuente) and comic Juanito er Kiko one year later (with Joan Bernet Toledano).
In 1981, together with American artist Alex Toth, Abuli created the antagonistic character of hit man Luca Torreli – Torpedo. That was the start of Torpedo 1936 that made Abuli famous worldwide. After first two episodes, Toth withdrew from the project, due to the creative differences. He was replaced by Jordi Bernet, who worked on all other episodes. In 1982, Torpedo appeared in Spanish horror-comics magazine Creepy and went on to be featured in several other Spanish comics magazines. Renowned French publishing house Glénat reissued the whole series consisted of 15 graphic novels. The last one appeared in 2000, when Torpedo ended due to the disagreements between the authors.
Torpedo has been translated into dozen languages. Due to its great popularity, dedicated comics magazine titled Luca Torelli es Torpedo appeared in 1991. Two years later in Barcelona, director Pepe Miravete created a theater setting for Torpedo. Episode Tic-Tac was adapted for animation; the first episode of 24 planned, but unrealized due to the censorship. Separate episodes were published in 12 issues of Spanish Playboy in 1991-1993. All these appeared conjointly in collection titled Los relatos de Torpedo (2005). Fourth album Chaud devant! was awarded as Best Foreign Album at Angoulême International Comics Festival. In 1994 and 1995 Torpedo was nominated for the Harvey Award for Best American Edition of Foreign Material.
From 1994 to 2002 Abuli collaborated with Chilean artist Felix Vega for Spanish Playboy. Partnership with Playboy produced graphic novels Las historietas del Playboy (with Vega) and La mariposa y la llama (with Martin Sauri). In co-authorship with Vega appeared yet another novel – Asesinos anónimos (2005). Other Abuli’s works include: Alex Magnum (two albums: 1986 and 1989, with Guines); Retour (1986), Historias Negras (1988), Parlez-moi de mort (1989) and Snake (1998), all four with Bernet; Joe Breakdown (1989, with Eric Puech); La epopeya de Chile: La Tierra de la Quimera (1992, with Alfonso Font); Kafre (3 albums, 1993-1995, with Das Pastoras); L’Albinos (1997, with Marcelo Perez); Capitaine La Guibole (2000, with Christian Rossi); Glam et Comet, Purée cosmique (2005, with Riff Reb’s) and Historias Tremendas (2009, with Oswal and Darko Perović).
Besides many important translations of foreign comics into Spanish (including Jeff Smith’s Bone), Abuli also left a visible mark in publishing; he was editor of magazines 1984, Creepy and Comix Internacional.

Collection of The Greatest Masters of Comics
    Jean-Marc Besnier, Paris, France

I’ve always been interested in reading American comic books and European “Bande Dessinée”. In the 70s and 80s, you could find stories about Spider-man, Superman and all kind of Superheroes in many different magazines, including the famous Strange which collected most of them. As any French kid, I have been reading many European comics (Tintin, Asterix, the Smurfs, etc…), but my own personal taste quickly got me more interested in American Comics. At the time, artists like Jack Kirby, Gene Colan, John Romita Sr and many others got me hooked…
In the mid-90s, the comic book industry got revolutionized by the appearance of new studios and publishing companies. Many artists left Marvel and DC comics, to create their own characters, and their own companies. That’s when the TopCow, Image, Wildstorm and Crossgen studios were born, and when characters like The Darkness, Spawn, Witchblade and Fathom appeared. This resulted in giving some fresh air to the industry, by improvements in the art itself, and the appearance of new drawing styles.
That’s when I started collecting original comic art, back in 2001. I randomly found my first page in a Parisian Art Gallery… and that’s when the collecting frenzy began. Then, with the growth of E-bay, you could easily have access to many original pages for sale. I quickly got in touch with many artists to directly buy pages from them. I also attended many conventions in the last five years: Paris, Barcelona, New York, San Diego, Long Beach, etc… I had a chance to meet the artists and get sketches or commissions from them. A big part of my collection is dedicated to “Superheroes in Paris”, made of drawings that I asked artists to draw specifically for me (what we call a “commission”).
Today, I own around 1.000 pages from a huge variety of American and European artists. My collection can be seen on a website I created in 2003 (http://www.jmb-art.com). Also, I’m part of an association, which organizes coming book conventions and signings in France – the WIP Agency (http://www.wip-agency.com). We also represent French comic artists in France and outside of France, and help them to sell their original artwork or commissioned work to fellow collectors.
My Collection started with one Superman page, bought in a Parisian art gallery, almost 10 years ago. I have first been focused around American artists only, but as tastes and passion evolved, I added many pieces from European artists as well, over the years. Today, my collection is made of about 1.000 original pages and covers. Hundreds of comic artists are represented, including the worldwide famous Jack Kirby, John Buscema, John Romita Jr, Gene Colan, Bob Layton, Adi Granov, Jim Lee, Dale Keown, Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, J. Scott Campbell, Esad Ribić, Alex Maleev, David Finch, Travis Charest, Moebius, Paolo Serpieri, Manara…
Another part of the collection is made of sketches that I got from artists at various conventions worldwide. It’s mostly on smaller formats, and less detailed, as these are mostly quick drawings made in a few minutes (when an original page usually requires hours of work). The “Superheroes in Paris” theme is a unique part of my collection, as these are original pages that were specifically drawn by many artists, on request. I am very proud to own some pieces from my favorite artists, who were nice enough to spend some of their valuable time to draw something for me only.
Many originals will be on display, with a wide variety of styles, characters and artists. I hope you will all enjoy the show!

    International Project THE MONSTERS

    Monsters r us
“Monsters” is an international comics project inspired by the collective representations of fabulous creatures. The Latin etymology gives the basic, philosophic, if you will, theme: Man’s Fear, projected unto the Unknown, mirrored back as personifications of Adversity, Ugly, Bad, Failure, Fatality… The wise men say: Place Bad before everything. It’s the worst scenario we must always consider first: Be prepared! Be afraid… very afraid!

After a Polish-Romanian comic book “Star Wars clichés”, we – Joanna Karpowicz (Krakow), Cristian Loghin (from Craiova to Krakow) and myself (Craiova) – started a new project, “Everybody sucks”, about vampires and other bloody suckers! It grew into a comic book, “Monsters without borders” (pl. “Strach nie zna granic”). The fascination with the theme kept me going these years considering the appetite for Monsters, built by the games industry aimed at by the young artists who altogether deserted, alas, the less lucrative comics industry. Then, a collective organic album seems to be a realistic, suitable project for this context: contributions were pointed and teams began to form for better results.

Samca, Evil Eye, the undead “moroi”, the mind-messing & blowing spirits of the forest, the gorgeously vicious fairies… the malefic gang is back. We also catch a glimpse of the heroic projection of our will to fight the other… projections of the Ugly and the Bad in a couple of stories: the Valliant! This is the proto-cinema! Humor and parody entered the stage. Monsters have been updated, as the Other: the Opponent, the Stranger, the Machine, the further Alien, and the farther Extraterrestrial…

So, you see, “Monsters” are in progress…

Winner of the Award for the Contribution to Serbian Comic Strip
    Novica Đukić (1925), Belgrade

He was born in Belgrade in 1925. After WW2, he began his career as an illustrator in “Dečja štampa” company, where he worked ten years. He published his illustrations in various editions printed by this publishing house. At the same time, he collaborated with children’s literary magazine “Zmaj”; he worked on title-pages for “Ekonomska politika” weekly; he illustrated various books and decorated issues of “Borba” newspaper dedicated to children with his artwork. During this period, he created several interesting comics: “Izgubljeni grad” (The Lost City), a contemporary story from a childhood; “Đogo i Karabatlak”, (Đogo & Karabatlak), based on a Serbian folktale; “35. maj” (The 35th of May), based on a novel by Erich Kestner; “Grad pod morem” (The City under the Sea), scripted by Jovan Aleksić. All were published in the “Pioniri” magazine. At the end of the Fifties, Novica Đukić became editor-in-chief of “Kekec”, “youth magazine for all, from 7 to 77”, which was part of “Borba” publishing company. “Kekec” was printed in four color offset press and when it appeared for the first time (on December 26, 1957), it overshadowed all similar editions. In short time, its circulation increased to more than 100.000 copies. Due to its contents and graphic design, “Kekec” remained one of the best domestic children’s papers. Thanks to Novica Đukić, Serbian audience was familiarized with well-known Franco-Belgian comics artists such as: Macherot, Jije, Morris, Monzon, Peyo, Funcken, Coelho, Franquin, and their legendary heroes: Chlorophylle et Minimum, Cha’pa et Group-Group, Colonel Clifton, Modeste et Pompon, Schtroumfs, Lucky Luke, Jerry Spring and Chevalier Blanc.
Novica Đukić was editor-in-chief of “Kekec” twice; from 1957 to 1964 and from 1976 to March 1978, when he retired.

    Anniversaries of Serbian comics:
60 years of comics in Leskovac / 15 years of comics school “Nikola Mitrović Kokan”, Leskovac

What makes Leskovac the comics center?

Is it the fact that Nikola Mitrović Kokan, bard of Yugoslav comics, supporting pillar of the legendary edition Nikad robom (“Never Surender”) and member of the team that created incredibly popular adventures Mirko and Slavko, was born and lived here? Perhaps one should include Miodrag Veličković in the debate, the most awarded domestic comics artist and caricaturist who won 105 prizes around the world (Italy, Canada, Japan, Turkey, Korea, Taiwan …) and who published ten thousand comic strips featuring his character Bocko! Or Mija Kulić, who was working with great success on licensed Tom and Jerry for Belgian publishers for several years, at the same time making comics for the magazine Gespenster, published by German Bastei-Verlag…
If magazine Đački Zabavnik of the late Jovan Pop Kocić, with its thirty issues filled with comics created by Nikola Mitrović Kokan, Srdjan Nikolić Peka, Mija Kulić, Mirko Vasiljević, Ninoslav Miljković, and Ivan Stamenković is not enough, then another magazine – Arsenal could even the odds. During the mid-nineties the only comic magazine that published domestic comics was exactly Arsenal; with its six issues it pushed the entire generation of comics artists to the scene, including Srđan Nikolić Peka, Jurica Dikić, Milisav Banković, Igor Stoiljković, Dejan Stanković, Ivan Stojanović Fiki, Goran Tasić, Saša Stanojković and myself. This generation mainly sprung out of Leskovac comics school… Well, this school is another good reason to classify Leskovac among comics centers! It was started in 1995 by Nikola Mitrović Kokan (whose name it now carries) and Mija Kulić and today under the leadership of Srđan Nikolić Peka and author of this text, it celebrates fifteen years of continuous operation! Balkan festival of young comics artists originated from the school. The city in which this festival, the oldest in the former Yugoslavia, takes place certainly deserves the name of the comics center? The festival has entered its fourteen years of existence, it is the only one of its kind in the Balkans and it is unique in the region because, in addition to its pedagogical character it gives “guild” awards to comics authors on yearly basis…
Maybe it is sufficient that the participant and author of this text in collaboration with Milisav Banković and Denis Dupanović already released four graphic novels for French publisher Septieme Choc? Or the fact that he, together with Srđan Nikolić Peka, started series Vekovnici, for magazine Politikin Zabavnik (five albums have been issued so far); after that Peka started to work with Belgian script writer Michel Dufrane on series Odessa for Belgian publisher Casterman. Maybe, the fact that contributes to Leskovac is that the writer Saša Stojanović publishes Balkan comics magazine called Think Tank, which, besides regular articles about comics and comics themselves, brings also special editions dedicated to the ninth art? Does the fact that Serbian comics scene finally got a theoretical framework which was lacking twenty years with the Think Tank presents strong enough argument to consider “little Manchester” as a comics center? Maybe the theoretical aspect should be strengthened by mentioning the collection of essays regarding the ninth art, titled Južnjačka uteha (“Southern Comfort”), written by the author of these lines and published by Cultural Center Niš! And maybe, just maybe, the simple fact that this year its comics scene celebrates exactly six decades of its existence is the good reason enough to count Leskovac among the comics centers…
    Marko Stojanović

5 years of “UPPS!” Internet Portal

    sUPPSessful, isn’t it?
…A group of dozen comics fans and collectors founded Association for the Promotion and Production of Comics – (Serbian: Udruženje za promociju i produkciju stripa – UPPS) on August 18th, 2005 in Belgrade; the aim was to promote comics as a medium, publishers, authors, comics schools and theoretical works in the field of comics in Serbia and Montenegro (and beyond). One of the main directions of UPPS activities was running of a web site that would promote the work of the Association… Emerged from the comics forums that have changed its address several times, web page of UPPS finally stopped at http://www.upps-sajt.com.
…In the beginning most of the articles were written by the members of the Association, headed by President Vladimir Ćuk. Thus, from the pen of Vladimir Tadić Darko Djokić, Aleksandar Mićić, Milan Jovanović, Dušan Mladenović and Sergej Karov first sections of UPPS popped up; their regularity depended on free time of young enthusiasts. Help of more experienced and already proven comics artists arrived very quickly. Besides regular editorials: Đole’s Recommendation, Ultimate Libertarian and occasional Thoughts from the Shadows, with Marko Stojanović, Dejan Stojiljković, Aleksandar Manić, Boris Lazić and Milan Konjević UPPS has gotten more weekly columns: Southern Comfort, Sour & Sweet, Slice and Dice, Onodenje, Archives of the North, Hit & Run…
We could say that for the five years of its existence, Association for the Promotion and Production of Comics – UPPS met most of the tasks through different routes of action and that the comic scene in the region is not the same with or without UPPS.
